Flos has launched two new lights, each of which uses the idea of a belt as a starting point
Belt, designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, is an architectural lighting system made with artisan leather. Available in a black, green or natural leather finish, the light appears to follow the natural draping of supple leather; however, the rigid components conceal elongated LED beams which are interspersed with ‘belts’ that are linked together and secured by a series of hardware buckles, allowing for modular configurations.
‘The best position for a light source is always unexpected, and so is its connection to the electrical source,’ say the Bouroullecs. ‘All the elements are uniformly made of leather, like belts. Some of them support the weight, some carry the electricity, some of them contain the light. Of course, the leather is key – it has some freedom, but also a certain stiffness, that makes the line harmonious.’
WireLine by Formafantasma is a more elliptically-shaped light. It uses flattened rubber to resemble a belt to which are added ribbed glass rods that house the LED light source. ‘We chose these materials in order to create a playful contrast between the industrial feel of rubber and the sophisticated sensuality of glass,’ says Formafantasma’s Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin.
First previewed at the 2019 Salone del Mobile, it is now finally available in either pink or forest green. It can be installed as a single piece or in a composition of several elements.
